I am a firm advocate of protecting kids online, and being an engaged parent when it comes to social networking, chat rooms, and texting. However, I'm realistic enough to know that as my children get older, they'll need more freedom and trust, in order to begin to stand on their own feet. How you decide how much freedom to give them is going to be a tough, and might vary from family to family, or even kid to kid within a family. The most important thing is to continue an open dialogue between you and your child, and to continually set the boundaries in your home.
